As if the Hatch Green Chile Fever that has gripped many burger joints in Houston hasn't spread enough, Whataburger has jumped on the bandwagon with their own Green Chile Double--available for the Dreaded Limited Time. They've also got Banana shakes and pies available for a limited time as well, if you're interested.
Whataburger Green Chile Double Blueprint:
2 all beef patties
American Cheese
Monterrey Jack Cheese
Roasted Hatch Green Chiles
On a white or wheat bun, or Texas Toast
In some ways the beauty of this burger is its simplicity. I know some folks would want to add mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato--and I nearly did--but I decided to try it as is and it was good. Whataburger's beef is NOT buttery Akaushi. It's probably ground chuck or sirloin, it's hot, chewy and slightly juicy; seasoned with salt and blck pepper. The cheese is standard fare--thoroughly melted and no surprises. The green chiles are a mix of mild herbal with occasional sparks of hot here and there. Nothing that'll knock you over but the spicy sparks are nice.
I will preface the grade by stating that I've been spoiled recently by some exceptional Hatch Green Chile Burgers. However I will also add that this burger is better than the usual Fast Food Burger.
The Foodie Professor grades Whataburger's Green Chile Double a B-.
