"Orchestrating Dinner for over 27 years" is the tagline for
Arpi's Phoenicia Deli--a restaurant founded by Arpi and her Husband Zohrab, Lebanese Immigrants who came to Houston and founded this West Houston Institution that is now partnered with
Phoenicia Specialty Foods. This location, the first of five in the greater Houston area, has slow smoked Shawarma style meats roasting on spits, fresh pita bread, along with all of your favourite side items like hummus, cucumber salad and babaghanouj, served cafeteria style. They also have Phoenicia's special coffees, teas, desserts and my favourite: Gelato!!!

Our party went to the location that abuts the West
Houston Phoenicia Specialty Foods on Westheimer and Houston WestCenter for a Friday dinner. We were able to get a nice mix of Standard Mediterranean fare that was served fresh, hot, and well seasoned, without being overly seasoned. My daughter Helena enjoyed some spinach and cheese pocket pies. She also shared a Shawarma Chicken pita wrap with her brother Jason. I had a Shawarma Lamb wrap and some chicken in yellow curry. We also had some babaghanouj, cool cucumber salad and tzaziki sauce. For dessert Helena enjoyed some cheesecake while I indulged in a Cardamom & Turkish Coffee Gelato.

I noticed the restaurant had a healthy crowd and the service was fairly quick. There were a few things we had to wait on (assembly of the wraps) but the wait was not long. We were mostly impressed with how fresh and full of flavour the food was. The cucumber salad and Tzaziki sauce were cool and fresh. The babaghanouj was garlicy and had a roasted flavour to it. The pita bread was soft and fresh. The humus grainy and herbal. No complaints about any of the food from anyone in our party. I also noticed the kitchen was wide open and quite clean. My only gripe is Helena ate all the cheesecake before I could get in a single bite--not Arpi's fault. It was just that good! The Cardamom Turkish Coffee Gelato had a clove type essence mixed with espresso coffee grounds--semi sweet, semi bitter and delicious. Not for the kiddos unless they have an exotic palate. Overall a satisfying dinner in a very clean, open, and family friendly environment. Thumbs up from us all!!!
