Review: Koagie Hots Food Truck

Once again I find myself chasing down another Houston Food Truck, like I did with Kurbside Eatz several weeks ago.  Once again, we are looking at Korean/Western Fusion food.  However, this time we aren't having Burgers or Tacos, this time it's Hoagies/PoBoys and Cheesesteaks, oh and hot dogs too!  Koagie Hots is the name of this great food truck.  They spend a lot of their time parked by Boondocks and Anvil over in the Heights/Montrose.  Today they were parked by Aqua Hand Wash near W Dallas and Montrose, and I happened to be working nearby on this particular day.  After a few checks with social media, I high-tailed it over there for some good eating.

Their menu is a nice straight forward offering of cheesesteaks and PoBoys made from thinly sliced Ribeye that's been marinated and cooked like Korean Style Barbecue/Bulgogi (they also have Chicken and pork as well) and piled high on a hard french roll with sauteed onions or scallions, kim chi, aioli, melted provolone cheese or Cheez Wiz™.  There are also add-ons like sauteed musrhooms, pickled peppers. a fried egg even, or hot peppers.  Their hot dogs (K-dogs) are topped with things like cucumbers, bacon, avocado and of course Kimchi!  Sign me up!  I am ready to K-Chow-Down!

I decided to go with the Koagie Cheesesteak with provolone, and took sauteed mushrooms as an add-on.  I also had some Koagie Curly Fries on the side, that were smothered in cheeze wiz and scallions.  And now without further ado, here are my takes on these wonderful Hot Eats from Koagie Hots:

The Koagie Cheesesteak was a nice mix of sweet, sour, bitter, salty, spicy, umami and crunch.  The hard french roll was a like a classic Philly Cheesesteak from Jakes on Chimney Rock.  The beef was tender, sweet and a little spicy.  The Kimchi was properly bitter and also spicy as well.  The onions, mushrooms, aioli and juices of the whole mixture blend so well together.  It's a flavour explosion in your mouth!  It's like someone took some great Bulgogi from a place on Long Point in Houston (Koreatown in Houston for those who don't know), slapped it on a hard roll with melted cheese and Kimchi, and shoved it in my face!

The Koagie Wiz fries are similar to the Koagie Cheeseteak, but I opted for just the beef, onions and Cheez Wiz™.  Unlike the Kurbside Fries I had several weeks ago, these are curly-Q fries and it has fewer toppings, but in this case, it's all good!  Same juicy, flavourful beef, same crunchy onions, served in gooey Cheez Wiz™ and have to be dug out of the container with a fork.  This is a meal unto itself.   I think next time I'll get the Kimchi fries--they use Feta cheese and come across almost as a K-Town style Poutine with Bulgogi.  Good eating all the way around and definitely worth the trip.  All you barflies on Washington Ave. and Lower Westheimer are damn fortunate that Houston has such wonderful Food Trucks serving up gourmet fast food Pub Grub like this.

I'll also add the young couple running the truck: managing partner Matthew Pak and his fiancee Monica Piñeda, were very friendly, Matthew recognized me, and they served the food up hot, fresh & with nothing but kind words for me!  Great food AND great service is a winning combo for any diner, folks.
