Review: Pink's Pizza

Pink's Pizza is a modest local chain of pizzerias that makes hand tossed Neapolitan style pizzas out of 4 locations in the Houston area.  I've passed by their Bissonnet location a number of times taking my kids to see their cousins and hang out with family.  Finally today, we were in the neighborhood, it was lunch time and the kids and I agreed on pizza.  We were passing Pink's and the rest of this story is now about to unfold...

Jason considers a Cheese Slice
We came in after lunch rush and saw a couple chowing down on a good looking pizza with several toppings.  There were 4 round tables with barstools in the main lobby and several more on a side lunch counter.  While this location is geared more towards delivery (you can order online in fact--and they deliver, if you live in their delivery zones).  The two fellows running the joint were very friendly and patient with me and my kids.  I was originally considering ordering one of their large foldable New York style slices, but after doing a little mental money math, I opted to order a small (12' diameter) Supremo, while I ordered the kids a giant slice of cheese for them to share (and look at the picture--it is big enough for a 7 year old and a 10 year old to share!!!)

We pulled up stools and waited--the kids' slice was done in about 10-12 minutes, my Supremo in about 17 minutes.  Served with a smile both times.  The single slice was huge and foldable--the way most folks rave about New York Style pizza.  The cheese was a little greasy, very gooey and quite tasty.  The tomato sauce is like sweet pureed tomatoes.  I should thank the kids for letting me have one bite while they devoured the rest.

Now, that my pizza has arrived here is the:

Pink's Supremo Pizza Blueprint:
pepperoni, Italian sausage,
Canadian bacon, onions,
black olives, bell peppers
& fresh mushrooms

This pizza had the same kind of thin crust I experienced at Pizaro's on Memorial--crunchy outside edge, chewy inside and in the center.   However, their pizza is baked in a natural gas conveyor oven, not a wood-fired brick oven, so it takes longer than at Pizaro's.  (Don't want to set unreasonable expectations, y'all!)  The tomato sauce was also like sweet tomato puree.  The sausage and pepperoni had a savoury, fennel and spicy pepper taste combined with sweet pork.  The Canadian bacon was nice and chewy.  The vegetable toppings were all fresh--slightly crunchy onions and peppers, mushy mushrooms.  This is a fairly standard supreme pizza, and it works quite well as a whole pie.  A real winner in my book.

Also so you know, you can pay $0.50 for pizza insurance with your order, which is invested in a number of charities.  They donated some for Tsunami aid in Japan a while back.  Right now they're collecting for planting trees in Memorial park after last year's drought disaster.  Worthy causes and I sprung for it.

For a second there, I actually thought, "There's actually pink pizza?" That aside, I sure wish we get pizza that big at our upcoming catering bristol event this Christmas.
