Review: The Burger Shack Grill in Spring Branch

Ah burgers!  Comfort food, beef, cheese, veggies and other wonderful food on a bun!  Convenient, full of flavour and a favourite of mine.  I'm always on the hunt for another burger joint to try and I recently realized that I had not shown love to a good, local, standard Burger Joint  known as The Burger Shack Grill.  I am correcting this oversight now thanks to a good Friday lunch and a nice conversation with owner/operator Greg Coulter.  This place is indeed a standard burger joint--but one with a very friendly and kind staff, good solid burgers and is located not too far away from the Loop or the Mid-burbs.  It's not one that necessarily jumps out at you, so allow me to introduce you to them for a bit...

Their menu has a pretty good variety of choices with regards to  meat patties (angus beef, turkey, buffalo, fried or grilled chicken), cheese (Wisconsin cheddar, Pepper Jack, Swiss), bun (Ashcraft White, Wheat or Jalapeño), add-ons (avocado, bacon, fried egg, etc.) and a works bar where you can load it up with lettuce, tomato, pickles, relish, red onions, regular mustard, regular ketchup, regular Mayo, Gulden's spicy brown mustard, Chipotle Ketchup, Chipolte Mayo, or A1 steak sauce.  It's always nice to have choices, if you ask me.  They also have hot dogs and other sides like beer battered onion rings and chili cheese fries too.

Today I was feeling a bit gamey, so I chose their Buffalo burger and built it thusly:

Buffalo Patty (their default is well done)

Sweet Crispy Bacon
A fried Egg over hard
Jalapeño Bun
Lettuce, Tomato, Pickles
Gulden's Spicy Brown Mustard and Chipolte Mayo

The buffalo meat is sweet and juicy (note to self: request medium next time--still good well done though!).  The bacon is high quality--cooked thick and a little crispy, generous amounts.  All the ingredients work together to give an above average eating experience that satisfied my hunger.  It may not be fancy Akaushi beef, but it was good for a nice Friday lunch, to be sure.

I had sweet potato fries for my side--their regular fries and onion rings are pretty good too--but the sweet frites tasted good dipped in the chipolte mayo.  I noticed all the veggies on their works bar were cool and crisp, fresh and the bar was kept clean.  I had to wait a little bit in order to get the burger--but not inordinately long.  Just FYI--not all burger joints are fast food, but there is nothing wrong with that.  Although they forgot the bacon, they fixed it when I alerted them to it, with a smile, friendly--no muss or fuss.  The dining area was kept clean and a couple of staff members circulated to deliver food and make sure the area was clean.  The place has a real Texas feel--like an old school burger joint from times gone by, but with some modern choices and all kinds of folks digging in.  Plenty of Texas flags, sports pennants and such adorn the walls too.  There were 6 fellows there working during the lunch rush, including Greg Coulter the owner--all friendly guys, chatting up the customers and taking care of business.

My oldest son goes to school in the area, and they get lunch brought in once a week from The Burger Shack. He LOVES their burgers. He tells me that even after being wrapped up and transported to the school (and presumably sitting around for a bit until lunch hour commences), the burgers are still hot and tasty and the buns don't get soggy.

He and I grabbed a quick dinner there last spring before a school event, and I agree with everything you said. The service was friendly, the place was clean, and the food was good. Not fancy, but still good!
