Old Favourite Review: Old Towne Kolache Westheimer & Fondren

Ah the Kolache!!! That Texas Czech breakfast favourite that we grab at local bakeries, on road trips through West, TX and Columbus, TX.  Well, what we call kolaches, anyhoo-- technically those are the ones with fruit. If it's got meat and savoury filling, it's called a Klobasniky.  Houston has plenty of places to get them, from the aptly named Kolache Factory to Shipley Donuts's take on the meat and cheese filled bun, if you're not in the mood for something sweet there.  Kolaches are warm, delicious, slightly sweet fresh-baked pastry traditionally filled with sausage, cheese, or fruit--and they are a nice self-contained breakfast that is a little more neat to eat than a breakfast taquito.

Hungry yet?!?!?!
Old Towne Kolache & Bakery is a small storefront on Westheimer and Fondren, two doors down from a Starbucks, that sells its take on our favourite Czech-Tex breakfast treat.  They're not large in size, but the kolaches they sell are large on flavour, made fresh daily and come in many varieties.  They're one of the few places outside of West, TX that actually have the Poppy Seed and Pineapple Fruit Flavours.  They also have Chicken and Beef Fajita kolaches, as well as a Spicy Ranchero egg and Cheese kolache that is loaded with spicy Chorizio Sausage.

But Old Towne isn't just about Kolaches.  You can get breakfast tacos, muffins, cinnamon buns and other sweets there.  They also do Corporate Breakfast Catering, and they boxed lunches with fresh sandwiches and snack trays as well.

Old Towne Kolache has been operating in Westchase since 2008 and has held up well next to The Green Death Star (a.k.a. Starbucks Coffee) and within a mile of a Kolache Factory and a Shipley's Donuts.  The reason why they've done well with such strong competition is a mixture of a good location (on the way to work for many Westheimer drivers), the fact that Starbucks doesn't have kolaches (frequently you will see folks with a Starbucks coffee cup walking in and buying a few kolaches--I'm one of them), and most importantly, they produce a good product.  The dough and meats are warm, savoury and properly cooked.  The Fruit varieties are many and unique.  The storefront is small, but you get a good view of all that is available.  And the staff is friendly.
