Old Favourite Review: Russo's NY Pizzeria

I live near the Westchase area and one of the great things about it is the chime of restaurants. Here there is a mixture of great local fare and some chains. You can find all manner of cuisine at all hours of the day or night. However, as Smashburger will tell you, the competition for restaurants in Westchase is cut throat.

Clam Chowder--New England Italian Style
Russo New York Pizzeria is a chain of Pizzerias based in Texas whose NY style thin crust pizza is one of my favorites that I hit one every few months. They have a location off 290 & 1960, and I-10 and Bunker Hill that have a coal fired oven which is well worth the drive. The Westhiemer location in Westcahse is just as good, but sans coal fired oven. They've been around a number of years, and show no sign of going away. Be thankful of that.

HUGE New York Slice
One of their best deals is a lunch special where you can get one HUGE slice of their specialty pizzas and a side salad or a small cup of soup for $7.95 plus tax & Tip. And this is what i will share with you today! I chose the New York village pizza topped with cured pepperoni, Italian sausage, fresh mushrooms, black olives, bell peppers, Canadian bacon, hamburger & mozzarella cheese; for my soup I chose clam chowder.

It had been several months since I'd been to Russo's--no particular reason why, just been busy. However this great clam chowder--slightly herbal and tomato seasoned in the cream, teaming with clams--reminded me why I was always happy to come back here. And the pizza, loaded with savoury meats, fresh veggies and stringy cheese on that huge slice of thin crust with a little edge to hold it in, totally delicious and completely satisfying my itch for good pizza! A slice of meaty veggie goodness! The service was friendly and I was given some herbed Parmesan flatbread and warm marinara sauce for dipping while I waited--no extra charge. All around great New York pizza with Houston hospitality!

I really like this chain because the food is served fresh and full of flavour, the quality is consistent, and it is based here in Texas.  I just realized recently that, like several other old favourite restaurants, I had not done them the courtesy of a review and wanted to correct this oversight.

Russo's has location all over Houston, including 2 with coal fired pizza ovens.  I went to the Royal Oaks location at:

11660 Westheimer, #103
Houston, TX 77077

I read a recent review of Russo's in The Woodlands - Good stuff at Russo's, at least that time. General opinions seem to vary, most of them citing poor service.

Thanks for sharing. What diners need to remember is that Russo's is a limited run chain, and as a result, the franchisee may do very well or very poorly.

A good franchisee can make average food seem good with good service and customer relations. A bad franchisee can make good food seem horrible due to poor service and customer relations.

The folks running the Westchase location of Russo's are very friendly, offer 10% discount on their lunch specials for HCC students, and offered the Herb bread with marinara complementary--no charge. Other locations don't do this.
