Review: San Dong Noodle House

I live in the Alief/Sharpstown/Westchase area, and one huge advantage of this is the proximity to great restaurants, especially different kinds of Asian Cuisine. What's good about these places is typically they are a very good value--a lot of food for your money, and they tend to be more authentic than some of the more Westernized Asian and Asian fusion restaurants. What's not so great is that some of them don't give the type of service some Westerners are used to, and many of them are Cash Only. Still, if you are willing to hit the Wells Fargo or Chase ATM (there's more than just a couple in the area) first, you will find some unique and good cuisine to enjoy.  San Dong Noodle House is one of the good ones.

Their menu is fairly simple.  20 different items you can order by number.  Several of them have variations where you can order them with steamed rice instead of noodles.  Some of them are soups.  Some of them are meal combos.  All of them are loaded with good savoury seasonings, fresh veggies, meats and eggs.  All of them are authentic Chinese cuisine.  The varieties of meat include chicken, pork and beef.  Many dishes include eggs in them.  They also have different kinds of dumplings too.  In any event, this noodle parlour off of Bellaire Blvd. and Beltway 8 is defnintely worth the visit!

#5 Pork CHOP with Noodles and Veggies

I chose the #5--Pork Rib with Noodles.  My colleague had the same but chose rice instead.  Interesting to note the rice version come with a hard boiled egg and a couple of other veggies, while the noodle version comes with bok choy and egg boiled in the mixture.  What they are calling "pork ribs" looks more like a pork chop than than the usual Western thoughts on what pork ribs are (a rack of them to be specific).  However it is well seasoned and savoury.  Quite delicious.  The bok choy, is in a generous bowl filled with broth, ramen noodles, sliced green onions, seaweed and egg, a very great tasting, filling and satisfying bowl of noodles and broth on a cold winter day.  And at a price of $5.50 for the dish, it's a great value.

The lady running the counter is fairly firm, and the service is quick.  However, do not expect full table service.  They call your number when the dish is ready.  You have to get your own drinks and utensils from a pick up area near the counter.  The restaurant is mildly decorated, very clean, and I observed bussing personal thoroughly cleaning each table as diners left.  A fairly efficient operation.
