Review: Del Frisco's Grille in West Avenue

Several media friends and food lovers I know have been raving about Del Frisco's Grille in the West Avenue area of Upper Kirby.  Lily Jang and Mark Boyle were going on and on about their Grilled Cheese and Tomato Bisque.  Eater Houston stated their burger is one of the hot 12 burgers you MUST EAT NOW.  I've seen chefs from Del Frisco's presenting different dishes on local TV for the past few weeks, and finally I decided to take an evening to check them out.  Turns out it's been long overdue and as usual, I'm asking why I didn't get out here sooner.

Chipotle Mac N Cheese at Del Frisco's Grille
It was a slightly drizzly evening--the dining room was packed, but there was seating in the bar area.  I nice server by the name of Kristy Sly graciously found me a table.  I ordered a Karbach Hopadillo IPA while I was perusing the menu.  I've eaten a lot of chicken and roasted veggies as of late.  My inner carnivore was starving, and while I saw A LOT of great looking dishes on their menu.  However, I elected to get the Grille Prime Cheeseburger, two patties with American Cheese, lettuce, tomato, sweet pickles, red onions and topped with their house made Sloppy Sauce, served with Frites (or fries, French Fries or chips if that's your parlance.)  My server also suggested that I try their Chipotle Mac N Cheese as a side dish.  At this point I was famished and nursed my beer for a bit until the food arrived.

First of all, I want to thank Kristy Sly for recommending that Chipotle Mac N Cheese!  Yowzer this was some good stuff!  The shell macaroni were tender yet chewy like gnocchi.  The sauce was creamy, but not too heavy and had a touch of sweet heat.  Plus it was plated in a mini cast iron pan and topped with crumbled potato chips.  This was one of the best Mac N Cheese casseroles I've had it a while--ranks up there with Yardhouse's (Mac + Cheese)^2, to be sure!

Then there was the Burger.  And what a burger it is!  Two thin, juicy all beef patties, two layers of American cheese, fresh lettuce tomato pickle and red onion on the bottom, with a delicious Sloppy Sauce as they call it, all on a Challah bread bun!  The meat was sweet and chewy but not overly so.  The burger had a nice ooze factor, but wasn't too messy--the Challah bread soaked up some of the juice and only a little bit got away.  I was having to repress myself from imitating Samuel L. Jackson from Pulp Fiction in saying "Man!  Now THAT is one TASTY BURGER!"  It's okay, my taste buds were saying it for me.  Over, and over again.  T

The frites were the only thing that I could say were ordinary about what I had at Del Frisco's Grille--and really, it's hard to mess up French Fries.  These were just fine as far as I was concerned.  The Burger and the Chipotle Mac N Cheese were more than extraordinary enough, so ordinary frites worked with the rest of the meal just fine.

I also wanted to add that though Del Frisco's Grille was super busy and the dining room was packed, the servers found a seat for me in the bar.  I will also add that server Kristy Sly lives up to her surname in that she is one smart server--she asked what kind of a time window I needed for my meal and made sure I was served in a timely fashion as I only had about an hour.  This is the first time someone ever asked me this before and as someone who used to wait tables, I thought "Good idea!"  This can help you adjust your callback schedule as well as set reasonable expectations on wait time for food and other services.  The fact that Kristy did this while they were very busy impressed me and gives them an A+ in service.
