Review: Mainely Sandwiches

Several fellow foodbloggers have raved about Mainely Sandwiches location on I-45 for many years--was told it was the ONLY place in Houston you could get a genuine Lobster Roll Sandwich.  However, I don't usually go up that way and hadn't had reason to be heading that way lately.  That's my own fault--needed to make a better effort on that score.  However, a few months ago they opened a second location on Shepherd Drive near Upper Kirby, an area I spend A LOT of time between family and dining, so my excuses being overcome, I made my way over there with New England chow on the brain.

When I first came, I realized this was the old location of Sugar Baby's--where they'd operated for 6 years with their cupcake boutique.  I paused for a moment of silence, and realized I'd better not mention it to my daughter as she'd not take it too well... Anyhoo, you come in and you find order cards you fill out on the far left--not hard to do.  It asks for your name, what you  want, any modifications, and if it's for here or to go.  This slight detour actually helps their line move well and prevents order mistakes.  Their menu has a pretty wide representation of food:  Lobster Rolls, Crab Rolls, Italian Sammies, and Soups.  They even have home-made Whoopie Pies, and they also have Moxie Soda as well--something I've not seen outside of New England.

The Maine (pun intended) rep that Mainely Sandwiches has is for having the best Lobster Roll and Clam Chowda (that's how they're spelling it, don't send emails correcting me).  So when I dropped in for a late lunch, that's exactly what I went with.  FYI:  A lobster roll is steamed mixed lobster meat with mayonnaise, served on a buttered toasted roll.  Mainely Sandwiches is clearly using Slow Dough rolls like I've seen used at Good Dog Hot Dogs and for some of the Chefs and Show Dogs at James Coney Island.  The service is friendly, and the food came up faster than I expected.  But how did it taste?

The Lobster Roll's beauty is in its simplicity.  You have succulent, steamed lobster mixed with the creamy umami of mayonnaise.  I've had some that went too heavy on the mayo, but this one was just right.  The mayo was clearly lemon-based which worked so well with the lobster meat.  Just a hint of salt and pepper, and you have a tasty New England Seafood treat.  I'm very finicky about Clam Chowder.  I don't like the Manhattan kind in general--I prefer the New England kind.  I like mine thick, creamy, a little peppery with plenty of clams and potato chunks.  Mainely Sandwiches delivered on all of these.
